Vedant Patel, Deputy Spokesperson of the US Department of State, expressed his condolences to the family, stating that the pain of the death of 2-year-old Palestinian baby Mohammed et-Tamimi by the bullets of Israeli soldiers was "unimaginable".
Patel answered questions on the matter at the daily press conference. In response to a question about the death of baby Tamimi, who was shot in the head by Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank, Patel said, "I'm sure the pain of losing a child is unimaginable. Our condolences to the family of this child who tragically passed away."
The Deputy Spokesperson answered the question about whether those responsible were determined.
"It is our understanding that Israeli defense forces are investigating the incident and are conducting an urgent investigation into any operation that generally results in civilian casualties," he added.
Stating that Israeli settlers' occupation of Palestinian lands "undermines the geographical viability of a two-state solution", Vedant Patel said that this situation provoked tensions and further damaged trust between the parties.
"We have made it clear that the only realistic path to reconciliation and lasting peace to permanently end this conflict is through direct negotiations between the parties," Patel said.
Additionally, Patel said allegations that he supported the overthrow of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan were "untrue".
"Pakistani politics is a matter for the people of Pakistan to decide and pursue under the auspices of its own constitution and laws. The United States values our longstanding cooperation with Pakistan. We have always viewed a prosperous and democratic Pakistan as critical to US interests," he added.
