A group of deputies, led by Democrat Deputy Jennifer Wexton, submitted a bill called the "Uyghur Human Rights Protection Act" to the parliament, which includes granting the Uyghurs living in the Chinese-occupied East Turkestan the second priority refugee status determined by the US State Department.
Within the scope of the bill, which states that "oppression is applied to the Muslim and Turkish minority in China, especially the Uyghurs", it was demanded that people living in East Turkestan or who had to leave their places of residence due to the pressure they faced and their families should be granted second priority refugee status.
Lawmakers supporting the bill included Maria Elvira Salazar, Gregory Meeks, Don Beyer and Gerry Connolly.
