Prof. Dr. Mahmud Esad Coşan is a key figure in gaining insight into the direction of Muslim society and the challenges faced by Islam in the past century.
Esad Coşan, who lost his life in a traffic accident in Australia on February 4, 2001, was commemorated with mercy and gratitude on the anniversary of his death.
Coşan, a person of Sufism, science and cause, was born in 1938 in the Ahmetçe village of Çanakkale's Ayvacık district.
His father is Halil Necâti Efendi and his mother is Şadiye Hanım. Esad Coşan Hocaefendi moved to Istanbul and graduated from Vefa High School after primary school.
He graduated from Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Arab-Persian Philology in 1960.
Coşan, who entered Ankara University Faculty of Theology as an assistant, received the titles of doctor, associate professor and professor respectively.
TAKES HIS POST IN 1980
Halil Necati Efendi, who continued the conversations of His Holiness Mehmed Zahid Kotku, also included his son Esad Coşan Hocaefendi into the conversation circle of the scholars.
Esad Efendi, who received the close attention and affection of Mehmed Zahid Kotku, later became his son-in-law.
After the death of His Holiness M. Zahid Kotku in 1980, he took over the task of science and guidance.
He opened hadith and fiqh institutes in Istanbul, Ankara, Konya and Bursa.
He knew Arabic and Persian, Eastern languages, and German and English, Western languages.
Esad Coşan, who educated hundreds of students at the university, retired in 1987. Esad Coşan passed away on February 4, 2001, as a result of a traffic accident in Australia, while he was going to the city of Grifit to open a mosque with his son-in-law Prof. Dr. Ali Yücel Uyarel.
