15 million people in need of “Social Protection”

Social protection expenditure reached 785,7 billion Turkish Liras (TL) in 2021, an increase of 19,9 percent compared to the previous year.

The highest amount of social protection assistance was given to retired/elderly people with 353,6 billion TL. While the number of people receiving pensions/elderly, widows/orphans and disabled persons within the scope of social protection in Turkey was 14 million 288 thousand in 2020, it increased by 2,4 percent to 14 million 624 thousand in 2021.

Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) published the Social Protection Statistics 2021 data. Accordingly, social protection expenditure increased by 19,9 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year and amounted to 785 billion 662 million TL. 98,7 percent of this expenditure was social protection benefits with 775 billion 401 million TL. 
 

THE BIGGEST EXPENDITURE IS ON RETIRED/ELDERLY 

 
The share of social protection expenditures in gross domestic product (GSYH) was 10,8 percent in 2021. 
 
When analyzed on the basis of risk/needs groups, it was seen that the expenditures made on retired/elderly people had the largest share with 4,9 percent. This is followed by sickness/health care expenditures with 3,3 percent and widows/orphans expenditures with 1,2 percent. 64,8 percent of social protection benefits were given in cash. The biggest share in cash aids was the aid given to the retired/elderly people with 70,1 percent.

The share of social protection expenditures in gross domestic product (GSYH) was 10,8 percent in 2021. When analyzed on the basis of risk/needs groups, it was seen that the expenditures made on the retired/elderly had the largest share with 4,9 percent. Illness/health care expenditures and health care expenditures followed by 3,3 percent. It was followed by widow/orphan expenditures with 1,2 percent. 
 

LARGEST SHARE IN CASH AID GIVEN TO RETIRED/ELDERLY PEOPLE 

 
64,8 percent of social protection benefits were given in cash. The biggest share in cash aids was the aid given to the retired/elderly people with 70,1 percent. This was followed by widow/orphan benefits with 17,6 percent and unemployment benefits with 5,7 percent. While the number of people receiving pensions/elderly, widows/orphans and disabled persons within the scope of social protection in Turkey was 14 million 288 thousand in 2020, it increased by 2,4 percent to 14 million 624 thousand in 2021. While the number of salary benefits within the scope of social protection was 14 million 979 thousand in 2020, it increased to 15 million 362 thousand in 2021.
