According to the divorce figures for 2021 announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT), the divorce figures experienced last year captured the highest rate in the history of the Republic, and it was stated that 174,085 couples were divorced in 2021. The crude divorce rate, which expresses the number of divorces per thousand population, was 2,07 per thousand in 2021.
MARRIAGE RATE INCREASED 15,2 PERCENT, DIVORCE RATE INCREASED 27,46 PERCENT
Marriage and divorce statistics for 2021 have been published by the TURKSTAT. According to the data, the number of couples who got married last year increased by 15,02 percent compared to 2020 and reached 561,710. Last year, the number of divorces rose to 174,085 with an increase of 27,46 percent compared to the previous year. The number of divorces reaching 174,085 got the highest numbers in the history of the Republic. 33,6 percent of divorces took place in the first 5 years of marriage, and 20,9 percent in 6-10 years.
165,937 CHILDREN AFFECTED BY DIVORCE
While the most affected by the divorces are the children, TURKSTAT reported that as a result of the divorce of 174,085 couples in 2021, 165,937 children were handed over to their parents with custody. While it is noteworthy that the custody of 165,937 children was mostly given to mothers, in 2021, custody of 76,1 percent of the children were given to the mother and 23,9 percent to the father.
