The Ottoman heirloom 227-year-old mosque is closed with the decision of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The governor's office had decided to evacuate the historical Big Mosque which was protected due to the excavation of the mine in Elazığ's Maden district. Instead of closing or controlling the mine, which was determined to cause landslides, the governor's office had started to evacuate a total of 510 places including 278 houses and 232 work places. The evacuation of the conscience of the Big Mosque, the cultural heritage of the Servet-i Fünun, which was built in 1792, was expected to stop the evacuation of the authorities. However, President Erdoğan, instead of stopping the decision injuring conscience, the decision published in the Official Gazette and declared the region as a risky area, decided to evacuate the historic neighborhood and mosque! While this decision aroused great astonishment among the people of the region, they could not understand why President Erdoğan, who is sensitive about mosques, made such a decision.

Big Mosque, which was built in the district of Maden in Elazığ in 1792 and was also the subject of Serveti Fünun, was registered as the 1st group cultural asset to be protected in 2010. For the restoration and arrangement of the district deputies and finally the Felicity (Saadet) Party Istanbul Deputy Cihangir Islam was proposed to Parliament. However, there was a risk of landslides due to the excavation of the mine in the region. In order to protect the citizens from the risk of landslides, the governorship had checked the mining quarry in the region and instead of taking the necessary measures, it had decided to discharge the cultural heritage Mosque-i Kebir for 510 buildings in total. In the report dated 22 September 2017 prepared by Elazığ Governorship on the website of the Mineral District Governorate, the landslide risk was stated to be caused by the excavation of the mine and the necessary steps to be taken were listed.

The President of the Republic decided to evacuate the mosque!

While the governor's office did not even consider his own ground study, the citizens thought that this decision would be withdrawn upon the intervention of President Erdoğan and the authorities. However, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, instead of stopping the decision to prevent the evacuation of the Mosque, decided to make the region a risky area with the article published in the Official Gazette. The people of the region expressed that the historic Big Mosque and the surrounding 510 buildings were sacrificed to the mine, hoping to return from this mistake.
