Three civilians, including two children, and an Indian soldier have been killed by fresh border clashes between Indian and Pakistani forces, officials said Monday.

The Pakistani army's spokesperson's unit claimed Indian forces began "unprovoked" firing and shelling for several hours late Sunday night, killing a one-year-old baby and a local man.

The Indian Express newspaper reported a six-year-old child and an Indian soldier were killed by Pakistani fire. India accused Pakistan for the exchange.

Tensions between the two nuclear neighbors has failed to ease after 19 Indian soldiers were killed in Indian-held Kashmir last months, by militants India has claimed had links to Pakistan.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has since boasted about carrying out "surgical strikes" on the Pakistani side of the border, a claim Islamabad strongly rejected.

The two countries have been locked in numerous disputes over land and sea boundaries since Pakistan was created after the end of British rule and the partition of India in 1947.
