The highest participation in The Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) in history has been concluded. As the candidates' preference marathon started after the results announced, Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) President Bayram Ali Ersoy shared the statistics regarding the exam with the public.
Ersoy stated that 2 million 995 thousand 638 of the 3 million 527 thousand 443 candidates who applied to YKS's Basic Proficiency Test participated in the exam.
The correct answer statistics for YKS revealed the sad picture.
In the Basic Proficiency Test, university candidates were able to correctly answer 8 out of 40 questions in basic mathematics, 3.5 out of 20 questions in science, and 8 out of 20 questions in social sciences.
In the Field Proficiency Test, the average of correct answers decreased even more. The number of those who pulled zero, which was 96 thousand last year, increased to 100 thousand.
In addition to these, among the statistics that emerged, the OBP score, which was determined by the diploma score and added to the exam result, came to the fore in the discussions.
THERE ARE PROBLEMS IN THE MEASUREMENT EVALUATION SYSTEM
Reminding that the diploma grade of the students is added to the exam results with the name of OBP, Bursa Uludağ University Education Faculty Educational Sciences Lecturer Prof. Dr. Selahattin Turan said, regarding the allegations about the students' diploma scores, he said following words:
"Education system in Turkey; It does not benefit from current and scientific publications in the field of educational sciences and teacher training, or does not rely on scientific findings in its decisions, acts politically and employs the policy of saving the day. The current assessment and evaluation exam we use in education is focused; Due to the problems arising from the order, the system of guidance, which handles and evaluates the child in all its aspects and in the originality and uniqueness of each child, cannot be put to work. The results in the exams are not associated with the success of the class in the classroom. There is a need for a versatile and whole in-class assessment and evaluation system that will evaluate each child in a unique and different way, and an arrangement is urgently needed on these issues."
"IMMEDIATE STEPS ARE NEEDED TO BE TAKEN FOR THESE CHILDREN"
Turan stated that the applied education system and assessment and evaluation system are in a dead end and they are trying to save the day. He stated that the averages of Turkish lessons and mathematics lessons should be questioned in terms of the system and that the averages of these lessons are important.
"As secondary education institutions, we must accept that; We cannot teach anything, or ÖSYM should come out and say that we do not evaluate according to the secondary education program. Against these averages, it is necessary for the authorities to evaluate the process, not the result, and develop process-oriented improvement or intervention strategies," Turan added.
“TURKISH EDUCATION SYSTEM AND EXAMINATION SYSTEM IS IN A DAMAGE”
Noting that the results give messages about the Turkish education system, Turan stated that the results are proof that serious mistakes were made in the system's access to structure, behavior and pedagogical goals.
"With this result; In summary, it shows that 'pedagogical deep mistakes' have been made. System organizers, policy makers in education and the whole society need to question themselves about education, the future of their children and the future of their country. No one, including policy makers, is held accountable in the system and education. This is how education came and went, the mentality dominates. The Turkish education system and examination system are in a deadlock; There is a need for a new structure and behavior that monitors the system with a multifaceted, process-based, holistic evaluation model. From pre-school to doctorate, the Turkish education system should be handled holistically, in line with the future of the country, and the education system should be restructured for a new school and education approach where no child is eliminated and every school is qualified," Turan said.
