Construction Contractors Confederation (IMKON) had announced in its press statement the previous day that they had decided to stop work in the whole country as of September 9, reacting to the high increases in cement prices. Speaking to our newspaper about the decision they took, İMKON Chairman Tahir Tellioğlu noted that they would establish cement factories if prices were not adjusted at the end of 15 days.
Tellioğlu stated that there is no explanation for the exorbitant price increases in cement reaching 200 percent.
"This huge price increase affects many material inputs, especially the construction sector, and causes serious cost increases. This will increase housing prices and make it difficult for our citizens to access housing," he said.
IF NO RESULT, STOPPING WORK WILL BE EXTENDED
Tellioğlu stated that they will start on September 9 and that they will not place new orders for 15 days and stop production.
"If there is no improvement in prices at the end of 15 days, we will extend our stoppage time. If we can't get results from this, if we can't find a response, we will start the initiative to establish our own cement factories," he added.
Tellioğlu stated that they expected the Ministry of Commerce to address them after their call to quit, but the ministry ignored them.
"It is not appropriate for the social state to address a small group, which is the partner of the cartels of cement representatives, rather than taking the aggrieved party as a basis just because we are telling our troubles," he said.
Tellioğlu said that the Competition Authority should not remain a spectator against the exorbitant and monopolistic price increases in the cement industry.
