Minister of National Education Ziya Selçuk said in a statement, "We are ready for remedial education. We will eliminate negative impacts in academic, social, emotional and physical fields through a large and comprehensive remedial process. The studies that we will start as of June will also cover the 2021-2022 academic year." However, everyone expects that the disruption and lost time in education caused by the pandemic will be compensated. In this respect, the Minister's explanation was expected. So there is no surprise. However, there is often a difference between seeing the problems in all areas of life and offering solutions to these problems in word-plan and implementation. For example, after the schools had to be closed due to the epidemic, distance education inevitably came to the agenda. It was stated that all our students would benefit from this and they would not stay behind education and training in the days when distance education was on the agenda. However, although it was announced that all preparations for distance education were complete, we also realized that it is not possible to complete distance education. It is not possible for a significant portion of our students to access the internet. A significant portion of those who can reach do not have phones or tablets. I don't want to bring up those who don't have a computer at all.
It was said that for months, efforts were underway to ensure that most of the students had access to distance education, especially tablets were distributed to students who did not have a tablet, and the event was closed after a while. You think that there is nobody left in any corner of our country who cannot access the internet, and this deficiency of students who do not have a tablet is completed. At the point reached, to what extent these were achieved, to what extent the deficiencies were eliminated is not fully known, but about 15 months have passed and this period has been written on them as lost years for our students. Today, if someone still says that more than 80 percent of the students have benefited from distance education without any interruption, there was no loss in education, these words would not be convincing for me, I have no words for those who find it credible.
At this point, the heart wants all kinds of preparations to be made on remedial education. Because, as I mentioned earlier in this column, millions of students are detached from school, teachers and lessons. This is what I see around me. Because many students no longer want to go to school, moreover, they have abandoned some of their forward-looking goals. Even some students around me say they don't want to study. I mean, they're going through a psychological breakdown. Therefore, first of all, our young people need to be saved from this mental breakdown in order for compensatory education to give a real compensatory and reparative result. This will not happen with the repetition of lessons and information that have not been given. First of all, it is necessary to re-establish the physical and spiritual ties of our youth with their schools.
It is not enough to say that we opened schools, students have their classes and teachers. Of course, it will be beneficial for students to reach their schools, classes, friends and teachers in terms of establishing their relations with the lessons. However, establishing a bond of affection with schools and books will be the most important issue in remedial education. Otherwise, we do not want it at all, but it will be possible to encounter the unwanted result in distance education in remedial training. Because, in order to compensate for the gap in the knowledge of the students due to the epidemic, they first need psychological treatment before giving information to the students. If some of the students who had certain goals until a year ago do not want to go to school today and see going to school as a torture, first of all, this problem should be solved and then the compensation for the lack of knowledge should be considered.
