It turned out that one-third of the news from Africa came from foreign sources outside the continent. The report prepared by the initiative named 'Africa No Filter', with title "How does the African media cover Africa?" which was created to support and develop art, media and journalism in Africa, with the support of 38 journalists on the continent was shared with the public.
ALL MEDIA IN THEIR HANDS... NEGATIVE NEWS SPREADS
The report emphasized that the continent is still largely associated with negative news, which feeds negative thought patterns about Africa. In the report, 60 news sources from South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal (newspaper, website , radio and the like) were examined. In the report, which revealed that advertising revenues in the African media are low and news centers are shrinking, it was stated that 63 percent of 60 sources do not have correspondents in another African country.
"INDEPENDENCE ON PAPER... AFRICANS DO NOT WRITE THE SUBJECTS RELATING TO AFRICA"
The report underlined that the main problem in the African media is the news source. In the report, which noted that a quarter of the news about the continent was written by AFP and BBC and that the contribution of news agencies in Africa was quite limited, it was emphasized that the share of news agencies in the African continent was 2 percent.
Commenting on the report, Africa No Filter Managing Director Moky Makura said, “This research clearly shows that despite the continent's independence, years have passed, when it comes to writing stories that concern them, it is still not Africans. Moreover, because of these news, we are still reinforcing the image of a poor and dependent Africa”.
