According to a statement by the military, arsenals, weapon emplacements and hideouts used by the PKK in Qandil, Metina and Gara regions were destroyed in air strikes Thursday.

The military did not elaborate on the number of PKK positions or terrorists destroyed in the air strikes.

Founded in 1978, the PKK has waged a decades-long bloody campaign against Turkey.

The group is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU, resumed its armed campaign in July 2015 after a brief reconciliation period.

Since that time, it has been responsible for the deaths of some 1,200 security personnel and civilians, including women and children, while more than 4,000 security personnel and over 2,000 civilians have been injured.

Also Friday, top Turkish officials will hold a National Security Council (MGK) meeting to discuss the necessary steps that need to be taken against the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)'s upcoming independence referendum, which will take place on Sept. 25.

The Turkish military has been carrying out drills near the Iraqi border and has warned the KRG that they will face the consequences if they proceed with the referendum, despite international opposition.

Turkey has reiterated its opposition against the planned independence referendum, yet the Barzani administration says they will go forward with the vote.

In addition to Turkey, the U.S. and many other Western allies of Iraq oppose the planned referendum, which will possibly pave way for the secession of the KRG from Iraq.
