Arslan also called for the income tax bracket to be fixed at 10 percent.

In the minimum wage negotiations that started in the past weeks, a consensus could not be reached between the working class Türk-İş Confederation and TİSK Association, which represents the employer side. Thereupon, President Erdoğan announced the minimum wage as 8,506 Turkish Liras (TL) on Thursday. A statement on the subject came from Hak-İş Confederation Chairman Mahmut Arslan. Making a written statement on the subject, Hak-İş Confederation Chairman Mahmut Arslan stated that the increase in the minimum wage announced for 2023 is important and said, “Although the minimum wage increase that will be effective as of January is important, the determined figure did not fully meet the expectations of the workers and the society. We would like to underline once again that the family obligations of the employees should be taken into account when making adjustments to the minimum wage and that employees should be protected against the cost of living and especially food inflation.”

EMPLOYEES SHOULD BE PROTECTED AGAINST COST OF LIVING

Arslan stated that it is a good step to increase the amount given to the employer part of the minimum wage to 250 TL, and that it will be possible to improve this figure further by reducing the tax burden on the wage. Arslan said, “Considering the economic processes of our country, we reiterate our demand that the income tax rate be fixed at 10 percent for one year for all wage earners. In this context, we believe in the necessity of a regulation that will protect all employees against the cost of living by making a fundamental study on the minimum wage, that will not disrupt the collective bargaining order, and that will allow employees to live with their families in a humane manner.”
