In the event, which was held under the leadership of Şeker-İş Union and the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB), on the occasion of the October 16th World Food Day, attention was drawn to the food waste in the world. In the event, the main product was determined as sugar beet.
“OCTOBER 16 IS A DAY TO TAKE MEASURE THAN A CELEBRATION”
Stating that the number of people affected by food shortages in the world is at the limit of 1 billion, Şeker-İş Union Chairman İsa Gök pointed out that the world population continues to increase and said, “By estimating that the world population will reach 14 billion by 2050, more pessimistic pictures are taking shape. The fact that the amount of food thrown in the garbage dumps of developed countries is enough to feed 15 times more people who die of hunger in the world reveals the terrible extent of waste on the one hand and hunger on the other. In the light of these bitter realities, despite the World Food Day celebrations, an unmeasured and unbalanced course still prevails in the world. For this reason, October 16 should be a day actually more of a foreseeing the approaching dangers and taking precautions program than a celebration.”
“TOGETHER WE CAN BUILD THE RENEWABLE WORLD”
Expressing that the importance of rural life in the world has been realized, Gök noted that steps have been taken to provide new supports as well as the importance of rural development, and said, “As Turkey, whose rich geography and soil is called if you plant human you can harvest, we are also responsible for global food security, we can increase family farms which has a very important place and in this context, we can increase the number of segments we call small producers, and encourage the production of healthy food free of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) with some support. In short, we can eat neither the soil, the tree, nor the stone, but we can build a renewable world all over again.”
“FOOD PRODUCTS ARE NOT USED CAREFULLY IN THE WORLD”
Tourism and Travel Agencies Foundation (TÜRSAV) General Education Coordinator Nuri Uygun drew attention to the high level of waste in the use of food products around the world and pointed out that students at TÜRSAB schools cook to draw attention to food waste, and said, “As we all know, food products are not used carefully in the world. While some people in the world have access to food, others use only the parts they love. Tons of food products are thrown away. At today's event, we wanted to draw attention to food waste. Within the scope of the event, we made our products by drawing attention to sugar beet, that is, Turkish sugar.”
