Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) announced the ‘Regional Results of Income and Living Conditions Survey’ for 2021. Accordingly, the average annual equivalent household disposable income in Turkey was calculated as 37,400 Turkish Liras (TL) in 2021. In terms of Statistical Regional Units Classification (IBBS) 2nd Level Regions, the region with the highest income was ‘Istanbul’ with 51,765 TL. This was followed by İzmir region with 47,595 TL and Ankara region with 46,516 TL. Van, Muş, Bitlis and Hakkari were the regions with the lowest annual average equivalent household disposable income with 18,278 TL.
THE MOST INCOME INEQUALITY IS IN ISTANBUL
The P80/P20 ratio is calculated as the ratio of the income of the 20 percent with the highest income to the income of the 20 percent with the lowest income. As this ratio gets smaller, income inequality decreases. While the said ratio is 7,6 percent in Turkey in general, the regions with the lowest value in IBBS 2nd Level regions are determined as Malatya, Elazığ, Bingöl, Tunceli, with 4,1 percent and as Zonguldak, Karabük, Bartın and Bursa, Eskişehir, Bilecik, with 4,3 percent. The regions with the highest P80/P20 ratio were Istanbul with 8,2, Ağrı, Kars, Iğdır, Ardahan with 7,7 and Adana and Mersin with 7,2 percent.
ADANA, MERSIN IS HEAD IN POVERTY RATE
According to the poverty line calculated according to 50 percent of the equivalent household disposable individual income for each of the mentioned regions, the regions with the highest income-based relative poverty rate were listed as Adana, Mersin with 14,4 percent, Mardin, Batman, Şırnak, Siirt, Ağrı, Kars, Iğdır and Ardahan with 13,7 percent.
