The International Observation and Strategy Center (UGSAM), which has prepared remarkable files for the Anatolian Youth Association (AGD), has prepared a remarkable report on Cyprus. The report titled “Cyprus in the Spiral of Political Crises” included important statements about the latest developments in Cyprus and their effects on the future.
ENERGY DEPOSITS IN THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN INCREASED THE IMPORTANCE OF CYPRUS
In the report, which stated that the international importance of Cyprus increased one more time with the discovery of energy deposits in the Eastern Mediterranean, the report said, “The fact that the discoveries of energy reserves in recent years have concentrated around the island makes the value of Cyprus even more invaluable. This situation makes the legal/politically controversial situation of the island of Cyprus, which has been going on for years, even more inextricable.”
TRNC MUST ENSURE POLITICAL INTERNAL UNITY
It is well known that global powers are making an effective effort to avoid resolving the ongoing disputes in Cyprus. The report drew attention to the fragmented internal political structure of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), “The fragmentation of the political structure in the TRNC does not make political stability possible in the country. It does not seem possible for Northern Cyprus, which has not yet been able to achieve unity in its internal political structure, to reach an agreement with the Southern Greek part of the negotiations in the near future,” the report added.
BEWARE AGAINST FAIT ACCOMPLIS
In the conclusion part of the report, the following was noted:
“The increasing importance due to the energy deposits being discovered day by day makes the parties stubborn at the point of having a say in the management of the island. In Cyprus, it is necessary to establish internal unity in the north of the island, in case the federation talks are turned into a fait accompli by taking advantage of the political disagreements.”
