Turkey's main opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on Thursday proposed a bill to form what he calls a political ethics committee amid a spat over nepotism.

The bill by the Republican People's Party (CHP) head proposes the establishment of a political ethics committee to set out the ethical rules that the president, vice-presidents, ministers and lawmakers should abide by, and respond to citizens' requests to investigate violations of ethical rules.

According to the bill, the president, vice-presidents, ministers and lawmakers may not take charge of any private companies and use their positions to help themselves or third parties.

The ruling AKP has been criticised for nepotism and handing positions in various state institutions to people close to AKP.

After a similar approach observed by newly elected CHP mayors, Kılıçdaroğlu on July 26 listed several points for party mayors to adhere to, including appointing staff according to merit.
