Food prices had increased due to the economic crisis, the coronavirus pandemic and, finally, fluctuations in foreign exchange.

The most self-sacrificing step towards basic food materials that citizens have difficulty in purchasing came from 'Reis Gıda'. Turkey's well-established firm reinstated the "fixed price" application that it had implemented in 1994 and announced in November that they would apply the prices calculated from the cost in January as in December.

'Reis Gıda' Chairman of the Board of Directors Mehmet Reis stated that they fixed their prices until the end of January and said, “We implemented the fixed price application for the first time as 'Reis Gıda', saying, 'Inflation is not only the duty of governments but also business people' before the month of Ramadan in 1994, when annual inflation was 3 digits. Today, as in the past, we, as 'Reis Gıda', undertake that the price list, which was prepared with the product costs of the end of November 2021 at national and international sales points, and put into practice in the first week of December, is valid until the end of January 2022.”

“WHEN THE EXCHANGE RATE IS DROPPING, PRICING SHOULD BE DONE ACCORDINGLY”

Reis, who stated that the decrease in exchange rates should be reflected on the product on the shelf, "Those who raise prices when the exchange rate increases, should price accordingly when the foreign exchange decreases. Because commercial morality and business ethics require it. In our country, where inputs such as petroleum products, energy, chemical drug, fertilizers, seeds and feed in plant production and animal husbandry are imported on a large scale and priced at foreign exchange rates, the decrease in input costs gives confidence to the producers, encourages them and strengthens the food system. In order for us to produce more than we consume in 2022, we must go to a total production mobilization," he added.

“YOUNG PEOPLE NEED TO BE BROUGHT TO THE AGRICULTURAL ECONOMY”

“According to international reports, drought and extreme weather events are expected to continue, albeit intermittently. The climate crisis is changing production processes and product patterns. It is important to give additional supports according to the climatic conditions for 2022. Production of legumes with less water requirement should be preferred. The use of all fallow lands and arable land for agricultural activities, as well as the creation of large-scale production areas where more productive products suitable for climate and soil structure are grown within the scope of the basin-based support model, will increase Turkey's agricultural yield. Thus, both domestic consumption will be met and exports will increase. In addition to increasing production, food waste should be prevented and losses should be minimized in the process from field to fork. The population in the countryside is aging, emigrating to big cities, young people need to be brought into the agricultural economy," Reis added.
