A cooperation protocol was signed between Turkish Red Crescent and Şeker-İş Union to draw attention to food waste. As part of the cooperation, the donations accumulated in the piggy banks located in Şeker-İş's facilities will be served as hot meals at Turkish Red Crescent soup kitchens. Speaking about the protocol, Şeker-İş Union Chairman İsa Gök said, “We aim to contribute to the prevention of this waste and to raise awareness of our society by drawing attention to the waste of water and bread.”
The Turkish Food and Sugar Industry Workers (Şeker-İş) Union and the Turkish Red Crescent signed a cooperation protocol for the prevention of food waste and humanitarian aid activities. Turkish Red Crescent General Manager İbrahim Altan, Şeker-İş Union General President İsa Gök and other officials attended the ceremony held at the union headquarters. In his speech at the ceremony, Altan stated that the annual food waste per capita in Turkey is 93 kilograms (kg) and said, "This project will create a perception that will contribute to the efforts to combat waste." Isa Gok stating that they are excited to carry out the activities in a joint project with the Turkish Red Crescent for the first time, he said, “We aim to contribute to the prevention of this waste and to raise the awareness of our society by drawing attention to the waste of food, water and bread with our project on food waste with the theme of One Bite, One Life.” Stating that they will distribute posters and brochures related to the project to non-governmental organizations, workplaces and schools, Gök added: “The donations to be made for our campaign are entirely based on the conscientious responsibility of our people, whether they leave food scraps on their plates or not. The amount of aid accumulated in the piggy banks will be regularly collected by the Turkish Red Crescent officials every month and delivered to the determined places of need and their owners.”
COLLABORATION WILL BE MADE IN HUMANITARIAN ACTIVITIES
Emphasizing that the strategic importance of agriculture and food is better understood during the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change crisis, Gök drew attention to food waste around the world. After the speeches, Altan and Gök signed the cooperation protocol. According to the protocol, Turkish Red Crescent and Şeker-İş Union will cooperate in corporate social responsibility projects, food aid, cash aid, medical aid, health, shelter, education and other humanitarian aid activities. The money that citizens will throw in donation boxes to be placed at certain points in the restaurant, guesthouse and hotel in Antalya as party of Union will be used in humanitarian aid activities.
