The preference marathon continues in 2022 Examination for Higher Education (YKS), whose participation record was broken with the removal of the minimum passing score in the university exams… Increasing costs affect the preferences…
The preference marathon, which started after the university exam, will continue until August 5. While candidate students continued to make their choices, the exorbitant increase in house rents and dormitory fees began to be effective in making choices. Candidate students create their preference lists by considering whether they can afford the expenses rather than the department they want.
DORMITORY PRICES INCREASED 65 PERCENT ON AVERAGE
Candidates' selection marathon continues. While the candidates pay attention to universities, departments and job opportunities while making their choices, accommodation has also been added to these due to the increasing costs in recent years. While the increase in house rents and dormitory expenses affected the preferences of many students, many students made their choices in a limited area due to high housing fees. Some of the candidate students decided to study in the city where their families live. While dormitory fees have increased by an average of 65 percent in Turkey, this increase has exceeded 100 percent in some regions. Prices for private dormitories in Istanbul are between 15,000 Turkish Liras (TL) and 100,000 TL, and in Ankara from 16,000 TL to 100,000 TL.
THE CHOICE MADE WITH ANXIETY DIRECTS TO THE UNWANTED DEPARTMENT
Psychological Counselor İlhan Koç, who spoke to our newspaper about the effects of the economic situation on preferences, pointed out that the possibility of making mistakes in the preferences increased with the anxiety of the students and said, “The economic situation prevents the student from making the right decision while the stress experienced in the process of choosing is high. The first step of the right choice should be according to the meaning, values and personality of the school and profession to be chosen, but when the priority is to make decisions with economic concerns, it causes narrowing in preferences and feeling of obligation about the areas that one does not want. While there is a concentration in the big cities in the preferences, this accumulation causes the students who are willing to study to prefer universities in lower fields or outside their fields due to their economic inadequacies.”
THE CHOICE MADE WITH ANXIETY OF ECONOMY AFFECTS NEGATIVELY
Stating that the anxiety of finding a job after studying creates pressure, as well as the economic problems that university students will experience while studying, Koç pointed out that there is a decrease in the motivation of young people with these choices, “The biggest concern of young people when making their university choices was the fear and anxiety of finding a job after graduation. Nowadays, due to reasons such as not being able to study in the field where the costs increase, and not having the economic opportunities to go and graduate even if he-she wins the university he-she wants, it causes an increase in the tendency to universities and departments that have a job guarantee and can study more comfortably without having economic difficulties. These decisions given with economic imperatives cause a decrease in the motivation of the youth, their insufficient level of satisfaction, and a low life energy,” he added.
FEES CHANGE BETWEEN 500 AND 800 TL IF THEY CAN BE RESIDENT IN KYK DORMITORIES
While this is the case in private dormitories, in KYK dormitories, which are on the agenda with accommodation problems, eyes are on the quotas. According to the information received from the Credit and Dormitories Institution (KYK), while there are 776 dormitories in Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the capacity of these dormitories is 771,174. With the latest hikes in KYK dormitories, prices vary between 500 and 800 TL.
