The price hikes on everything also limited the travel of the citizens. While the fuel hike caused a great decrease in urban traffic, there was a noticeable decrease in intercity traffic. In order for a vehicle to travel on the intercity road, it also has to pay highway fees. When a vehicle is on the road, it has to pay an average of 1 Turkish Liras (TL) of fuel per kilometers (km), and a highway toll of up to 2 TL at some points.

While an average gasoline vehicle consumes around 36 liters of fuel on the 450-kilometers Ankara-Istanbul journey, the cost of fuel is 550,44 TL. If the highway is preferred for the journey, the payment continues.
PAYMENT DOESN'T END IN ISTANBUL
After the Anatolia highway from Ankara-Akıncı tolls is connected to the highway, a citizen who leaves the highway at Istanbul-Samandıra tolls pays 47 TL. Then, if he chooses the Eurasia Tunnel in the transition from the Anatolian side to the European side, he has to pay 53 TL there. In other words, a citizen who sets out with a gasoline-powered vehicle reaches the European side and has 650 TL out of his-her pocket. Thus, he pays 4,5 TL per kilometer for highway and tunnel passages, and 1,22 TL for fuel.
After the price hikes in fuel, a decrease was observed in the use of personal vehicles by citizens. While this trend caused a decrease in urban traffic, the density on intercity roads also decreased. If citizens prefer the highway for faster transportation other than fuel during intercity travel, they also have to pay a highway fee. There are two different types of highways managed by the state and private companies in highway tolls. The fares on these two different highways are also different.
