"Daesh is using bomb-laden drones to drop explosives on security personnel and civilians in eastern Mosul," Jabbar Hasan, a local police officer, told Anadolu Agency.
"Daesh carried out three attacks [in eastern Mosul] Wednesday, leaving two people dead and another 23 injured," Hasan said, noting that targeted areas had included the city’s Al-Jazzar, Al-Iqtisadiyyen, Al-Arabi and Al-Zuhoor districts.
"Iraqi security forces are having difficulties dealing with these drones, which Daesh uses at night, making it hard to shoot them down," he added. Mosul is currently the target of a wide-ranging army offensive aimed at recapturing the northern city, which Daesh overran in mid-2014.
Late last month, the army announced the "total liberation" of eastern Mosul following three months of fighting.
