Saadet Party Deputy and Head of Youth Branch Abdulkadir Karaduman made a written statement about the fees paid by the students for the exams and the increased dormitory prices.
Stating that the economic depression and crisis in Turkey affected the students who have no income the most, Karaduman pointed out that being a student in Turkey is economically challenging day by day.
"EXAM FEES INCREASED BY 500 PERCENT"
Reminding that Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) collected 2 billion 131 million 866,996 lira 84 kuruş exam fee from candidates in the last three years, Karaduman said, "Between 2017 and 2022, the single-session exam fee increased by more than 200 percent, while the double-session fee increased by 500 percent. In 2022, while 3 million 250 thousand candidates participated in YKS, a total of 1 billion 121 million 250 thousand TL was collected from the candidates. However, Credit and Dormitories Agency (KYK) scholarships and loans, whose nominal value increases in TL every year, are melting in the face of dollar exchange rate and inflation, and students cannot even meet their basic food and accommodation expenses."
"STUDENTS CANNOT GET ALONG!"
Karaduman reminded that KYK dormitories were made unprecedented in the history of the republic, and noted the following:
"In some dormitory types, the rate of increase has reached 80 percent. Around 680,000 students live in KYK dormitories. A total of 5 billion TL is collected from these students in a year. While the monthly scholarships and loans paid to students are 850 TL, what conscience would it take to get 800 TL back as dormitory fees? It is obvious that it is not realistic to expect the student to maintain expenditure items such as transportation, nutrition, access to source books and social needs with the remaining 50 TL. In addition to house rents, dormitory fees and even the lack of dormitories, even basic food goes to points that cannot be met financially. Students can't get along! Before the new education period starts, the government should take the necessary measures in these matters and provide the conditions in which the student can meet his basic needs while receiving education."
