The new social media bill, which is known as the ‘Disinformation Law’ in the public, caused a great reaction within the Justice and Development Party (AKP). While many AKP deputies did not sign the bill prepared by the AKP and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) deputies, MHP deputies fully support the bill. Particularly, the 29th article, which is at the center of the discussions, is also harshly criticized within the party.
MAHIR UNAL DID NOT SIGN
While the number of people who want the social media law to be passed in its current form is low within the AKP, it is stated that there are quite a lot of people who want the change in the focus of the discussions. The fact that AKP Group Deputy Chairman Mahir Ünal, working on social media regulation, did not sign the bill reveals the extent of the crack in the party. However, MHP deputies continue to insist that the law in its current form be passed by the General Assembly.
DISCUSSIONAL ITEM IS CHANGING
AKP staff members within the party has increased their efforts to amend the objectionable articles in the law proposal so that there is no division. It is stated that the ‘crime of publicly disseminating misleading information’ in article 29 of the bill will be discussed again. It is noted that a more in-depth explanation of the subject matter will be made. In addition, it is emphasized that the 3-year prison sentence will be replaced by a motion for the same article.
