Egyptian authorities on Friday urged Israel to ease tension after metal detectors were installed at the gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque, the foreign ministry said.

Egypt is extremely worried about the disproportionate use of force by police against Palestinians in Jerusalem and around Al-Aqsa Mosque, according to a statement.

The Israeli government should act in a reasonable way before efforts to re-start peace talks to reach a fair solution in Palestine question dies in vain, it added.

The Arab Union also condemned “police using excessive force and real bullet to disperse unprotected Palestinians”.

A statement said it called on the international community to take responsibility to warn Israel to stop such acts and respect the international decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem.

Israeli authorities last week canceled weekly Friday prayers for the first time in nearly five decades, following a shootout that left three Palestinians and two Israeli policemen dead.

Israel's imposition of metal detectors on the site this week triggered protests that left at least three Palestinians dead and hundreds wounded.
