In his Cyprus report to the UN Security Council, Secretary General Antonio Guterres stressed that the island's hopes for a comprehensive settlement are still alive. Guterres presented his report to the UN Security Council, following provisional consultant Jane Holl Lute's consultations with the parties on the issue. In the report, Guterres said he believes a comprehensive solution will be implemented between two sectors in the island. I believe there are still hope for a comprehensive settlement between the two communities in the island, Guterres said.
Guterres said that a process with no results and no end is left behind, and that there is no widespread understanding that unsustainability cannot be sustained in Cyprus. "The next process should be prepared in good time with a sense of urgency", Guterres said, adding that "new ideas may be needed" for a new effort.
Guterres said that before the negotiations began, a real convergence of key issues would be reached and Lute would go to the Island to continue their consultations to measure their willingness to bring forward new proposals for a common future that the parties can foresee. Guterres also asked the parties to agree on the starting point in the report, before resuming full-fledged negotiations. The report will be discussed at the UN Security Council on October 30th. Guterres said that natural resources should encourage the parties to work on finding a mutually acceptable and permanent solution.
