The election threshold, which is one of the biggest obstacles in front of the will of the people, has recently come to the agenda of politics. Yesterday, a statement came from the most authoritative person on the subject, President Erdoğan.
“We haven't made the final decision, but 7 has been clarified”
After his visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, President Erdoğan chatted with invited journalists on the plane. On the question of the election threshold, Erdoğan said:
"It is actually 7 that has become evident regarding the threshold at the moment, but as the People's Alliance, our friends from MHP have not taken the final decision on this issue yet. However, 7 is clear. MHP also views 7 positively. Whether there is something below that or not, it has not come before us yet. If such a thing happens, it can of course be discussed, but for now there is no such thing."
"About the election threshold, the seven percent option comes fore, but the final decision hasn't been adopted yet," Erdoğan said.
"The MHP also favors seven percent. We don't know whether something below it will be on the table," he noted.
The works on changing the election law began after numerous polls showed that the People's Alliance is rapidly losing votes. Decreasing the threshold would serve the MHP, since its votes are below the current threshold. The opposition agrees that the election threshold must be decreased, but is skeptical of the changes in the election law since it's widely perceived as Erdoğan's move to cling to power. The parties have also been calling for snap polls, citing the country's current economic downfall.
