After the US decision to withdraw from Afghanistan and the Afghan administration's unsuccessful peace talks with the Taliban, the Taliban attacks accelerated.

The Taliban, after capturing dozens of districts as of June, turned to the provincial centers that they besieged.

Zaranj, the provincial center of Nimroz on the Afghanistan-Iran border, became the first provincial center captured by the Taliban. Afghan security forces subsequently lost control of the Taliban in 18 provincial centres, mostly in the north and south.
