The European Commission on Thursday said it would provide nearly €11 million ($12 million) in extra funding to fight cybercrime.

First Vice-President Frans Timmermans said: "Europe must face up to security challenges and terrorist threats together”, adding the EU needed to keep improving its response to cyberattacks.

This year has seen at least two major global cyberattacks, as ransomware known as WannaCry and Petya locked users out of their files, demanding payment to unencrypt valuable data.

The European Commission said it was working to close gaps in its current cybersecurity framework.

Fourteen EU states will receive the extra funding to strengthen national-level Computer Security Incident Response Teams.
