Turkey’s presidential spokesman Tuesday said that the “mourning” of some Europeans was as expected after Turkish citizens Sunday voted Yes in favor of constitutional changes.

"Some Europeans, who would have celebrated and praised Turkish democracy if Yes had gotten [only] 49 percent, today are in mourning. We are not surprised," wrote Ibrahim Kalin on his official Twitter account.

On Sunday, a majority of Turkish voters cast ballots in favor of 18 constitutional amendments set to, among other things, switch Turkey from a parliamentary system of government to a presidential one.

According to unofficial results, the Yes campaign won with 51.41 percent, while the No votes stood at 48.59 percent. Voter turnout was 85.46 percent.
