There are differences between users and academics regarding the definition of social media. One of the definitions related to social media is a platform that enables communication, sharing information or producing content by using internet technologies. The first social networking site was established in 1997. This site, Sixdegrees.com, allows users to create profiles, list their friends, and from 1998 onwards. The popularity of social networks such as Myspace (2003) and Facebook (2004) has increased and the concept of social media has started to gain importance after the Internet has accelerated and expanded.

On the other hand, social media is defined as the transition from web 1.0 technologies, which are defined as static, closed to participation, one-way mass communication where authority is evident and user passive, to dynamic, interactive, authority-dispersed and user-active two-way social media communication web 2.0 technologies. Web 2.0 technology has emerged as an update of the world wide web (www) process and is known as a system where the user produces content, shares, likes the sharing of others, comments to them, in short, actively participates in the media process. Web 2.0 technology has enabled the evolution of social media. Although Web 2.0 was launched in 1999 by Darey DiNucci. It became truly famous at a conference organized by Tim O'Reilly and Media Live International in 2004.

"We are social" digital marketing agency's 2016 report on global and local digital content, according to the report today, 7.4 billion people live in the world. About 3.42 billion of this population is actively using the Internet. Active mobile internet users have 1.86 billion people. 2.31 billion active social media user accounts. Of the 3.79 billion active mobile line users, 1.97 billion use their social media accounts mobile.

When we look at our country, 46.3 million of our 80 million citizens are active internet users. We see that 40.5 million people are active mobile internet users. We have 42 million people with active social media accounts. 36 million of our 71 million mobile line users actively monitor their social media accounts on mobile lines.

From January 2015 until January 2016 in the world and Turkey to bear on some of the research results in the following way; active internet user, active social media account increased by 10% and active mobile social media account increased by 17% in a year. In contrast, in Turkey; active internet users increased by 10%, active social media account increased by 5% and active mobile social media account increased by 13%. In our country, an average of 4 hours 14 minutes daily is used from a tablet, laptop or PC and 2 hours 35 minutes from a mobile phone. Social media is used on average from any device for 2 hours and 32 minutes daily. Internet users watch television for an average of 2 hours and 18 minutes per day.

In the world of social media, figures and increase rates are incredible. Probably, these numbers and increase rates have doubled today. Rapidly advancing technology, unreasonable technology, human outages, the journey to the world dominated by machines, and we are all watching them carefully! We watch carefully and still maintain our position in the passive consuming area. We seem to have no intention of producing. We continue to use foreign names, brands and technology. That's not a good thing.
