While seeking solutions for the agriculture and food crisis, which has been on the agenda recently, water was started to be supplied 8 years ago in the Suruç district of Şanlıurfa within the scope of the Southeast Anatolia Project (GAP). With the project, while Suruç was expected to grow in agriculture, tens of thousands of acres of fields were submerged in water. Producers living in the region want the promise of drainage channels to be kept.
While countries were trying to find a solution to the global food crisis that came to the fore with the global pandemic and Russia and the Ukraine war, tens of thousands of acres of fields were allowed to be submerged in Turkey. Producers living in the region pointed out that the promise to build the drainage channels and drainage system was given at the beginning of the project, but it was not kept.
THE PROJECT WAS IMPLEMENTED BEFORE THE INFRASTRUCTURE CAME, MANUFACTURER BECOME THE VICTIM
In the Suruç district of Şanlıurfa, 8 years ago, water, which was started to be given to agricultural areas within the scope of the GAP project, has become a nightmare for the producers. Tens of thousands of acres of agricultural land were flooded with the failure of the system which drainage channels and drainage to be done at the beginning of the project for the water supplied to the district within the scope of the project, while some villages were flooded due to the project, which was put into use before the infrastructure was established.
NEITHER PRODUCTION CAN BE MADE NOR THE FIELD REMAINS
Due to the crises in the world, the food crisis is on the agenda as a universal problem. However, the project that took place in Suruç, one of the important production centers, caused tens of thousands of acres of fields to become unusable due to lack of planning, tons of products of the producers became garbage. In addition to not being able to produce, producers are also losing their fields.
CALL FROM THE MANUFACTURERS TO “ESTABLISH THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM ASAP”
While the bottom of the soil in the region consists of basalt stones, since this stone is not water permeable, the water supplied to the region within the scope of the project became a nightmare instead of benefiting the producers. While the people of the region complain about the project that started to be implemented in the 8-year period, because of steps are not taken for the establishment of drainage channels and drainage system, they also call for the elimination of grievances experienced.
