Turkey entered its third day under the influence of the earthquake. While thousands of buildings were destroyed due to the earthquake, 7,108 people lost their lives.
In the earthquake, in which more than 40 thousand people were injured, work intensified in Kahramanmaraş, Adıyaman, Gaziantep, Malatya and Hatay. While two thirds of Hatay are affected by the earthquake, the dimensions of the disaster are increasing in some districts, especially İslahiye, in Antep.
“WHERE IS THE STATE? WHERE IS AFAD?”
While the effect of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Kahramanmaraş's Pazarcık district on Monday, 6 February continued, with the second earthquake that occurred in Elbistan district, severe consequences arose in 10 provinces.
We took the pulse of Hatay and Antep, the regions most affected by the earthquake. While many districts of Hatay were affected by the earthquake, no undamaged buildings were left standing in the city center. In the region where search and rescue teams are insufficient, there are hundreds of buildings that cannot be reached yet.
In the debris areas where Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) is insufficient, citizens are trying to save their relatives with extraordinary effort. In places where there is a coordination problem, citizens ask, “Where is the state? Where is AFAD?” he says, voicing his reproaches.
In cities where aftershocks continue at full speed, the concern of a new earthquake continues.
PEOPLE FREEZE TO DEATH
As of Monday, when the earthquake took place, cold climatic conditions have been effective, and there is a danger of hypothermia at night. Citizens speaking in the region stated that the people who were pulled out of the rubble died from the cold, while the citizens, whose houses were destroyed in the freezing cold, stated that they had to spend the night outside because their needs such as tents and containers were not met.
Citizens are trying to warm up by burning the wooden items they took out of the houses by entering the rubble. Citizens who cannot stay warm in the dark due to the damage to electricity, water, natural gas and internet infrastructure, want winter clothes such as blankets, coats and shoes, as well as basic materials such as bread and water to be brought to the region.
