Health and Social Services Workers Union (Sağlık-Sen) Chairman Semih Durmuş, who presented the report to the public, drew attention to the power of social media and said, "With the influence of social media, these cases of violence can often and suddenly become one of the most important agenda items of the society."
‘Sağlık-Sen’, affiliated to the ‘Memur-Sen’ Confederation, shared the February data of the 'Violence in Health Report', which it prepares and shares with the public every month, with the public at the press conference. It was noted that cases of violence in health continued unceasingly in February as well. Sağlık-Sen Chairman Semih Durmuş, who shared the report with the public, drew attention to the fact that violence cases in health are on the agenda every day.
“THE PREVENTIVE SAFETY MEASURES ARE NOT ENOUGH ALONE”
Emphasizing that the problem of violence in health is a multifaceted problem, Durmuş drew attention to the fact that preventive security measures against violence are not sufficient alone.
“We believe that preventive security measures are taken at a high level in health units and it's hard to say if it's implemented. It is probable that hospitals and health centers are among the most accessible places among public service institutions. They can easily insert whatever they want, from a gun to an ax, from a knife to a stick," Durmuş added.
“PATIENTS WAITING HEALING AND PATIENT’S RELATIVES CAUSE VIOLENCE”
Durmuş, who shared the data on the cases of violence in health in February, stated that 43 healthcare workers were victims in 21 incidents of violence caused by 31 attackers in February, and said, “8 of the 21 violence incidents experienced during the month were perpetrated by the patients themselves. Relatives of the patients caused 13 incidents. This is a situation we witness almost every month; violence is carried out by patients who are waiting for healing, and their relatives. 17 of the 21 cases of violence experienced, occurred both verbally and verbally, and 4 of 21 occurred verbally."
“VIOLENCE IN HEALTH MOSTLY IN HOSPITALS”
Pointing out that violence is mostly experienced in hospitals, “While 19 out of 21 violence incidents took place in hospitals, 1 incident occurred in the family health center and 1 incident occurred in the field. During the month, 12 nurses, 11 doctors, 4 security guards, 3 emergency health care workers and 13 health workers from other branches became victims of violence. As you can see, violence does not discriminate between employees. 14 of the 31 attackers who committed violence during the month, were arrested. Compared to the past, this is serious progress that requires us to have hope. Undoubtedly, the most important reason for reaching this point is the sensitivity in the society. In addition, 6 of the detained attackers were released and an investigation was launched against 7 attackers. It was determined that no action was taken against 4 attackers,” Durmuş added.
