A highway constructed by a Turkish pro-government company collapsed on March 27 around nine years after it was completed.

Some 85 meters of the D-655 highway that connects the northern provinces of Düzce and Zonguldak collapsed, prompting authorities to launch efforts to create an alternative route.

The road was constructed by Limak Holding, a company that gained a huge amount of income under the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) due to its close links to the government.

The company often makes headlines for winning tenders. The collapsed road is included in the list of completed projects on the company's website.

Limak deemed the road construction that was completed in 2012 "a significant project for our country's economy."
