Following the announcement of TURKSTAT's December inflation figures, there was an increase in the salaries of public employees and retirees.
Mehmet Alper Öğretici, Chairman of the Confederation of Independent Public Servants' Unions (BASK), stated that public employees became creditors in the second 6 months of 2023.
He underlined that only a 15 percent raise was received with the raise decision agreed in the collective agreement.
Stating that public servants and retirees will receive a 15 percent increase in accordance with the collective agreement, Öğretici pointed out the losses due to inflation.
"Public servants and retirees will receive only a 15 percent increase in accordance with the collective agreement for January 2024. The 29.78 percent increase that will be given as the inflation difference from last year is not a raise, but a compensation for what we had to pay last year. Moreover, out-of-pocket compensation will not be refunded for 6 months, and compensation will be prevented from January onwards," Öğretici said.
“WELFARE SHARE SHOULD BE GIVEN THAT WILL NOT BE UNDER INFLATION”
Stating that the increases that public employees and retirees have received for years have remained below inflation, Mehmet Alper Öğretici underlined that the increases are only as much as TÜİK data.
"In fact, the wages of civil servants and retirees stagnated and no raises were received. It should be known that an increase equal to inflation is a zero increase. Moreover, the increase made by TURKSTAT inflation is a negative increase that reduces purchasing power. For all these reasons, it is essential that civil servants and retirees be given a welfare share that will not remain below inflation," Öğretici added.

Drawing attention to the research conducted by BASK, Mehmet Alper Öğretici explained the losses of some public employees according to the December inflation figures announced by TÜİK.
