Former Israeli Prime Minister and main opposition leader Yair Lapid said that signing a normalization agreement with Saudi Arabia as presented would lead to a "nuclear arms race" in the Middle East that would endanger his country's existence.

Lapid spoke to the Israeli media about reports that Riyadh is mandating a US-mediated civilian nuclear program to normalize relations with Tel Aviv.

Lapid, leader of the main opposition party "Future Has", stated that the problem with the deal with Riyadh is that part of the agreement allows uranium enrichment on Saudi Arabian soil, and Tel Aviv cannot accept this in any way.

"What will we do if the Saudis say they no longer want (international) control over the nuclear program after two years? I strongly support reaching an agreement with Saudi Arabia, I took action and took the first steps in this regard. I will support any agreement with Saudi Arabia that does not involve enrichment of uranium," Lapid said.

Lapid stated that the enrichment of uranium on the territory of Saudi Arabia is "unacceptable" by Israel and that the USA knows this.

"This will immediately lead to a nuclear arms race throughout the Middle East, which will endanger the existence of the State of Israel," Lapid added.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) newspaper reported that the United States and Saudi Arabia recognized Saudi Arabia in exchange for "Israel's concessions to the Palestinians, the United States' security guarantees to Riyadh and its support for its civilian nuclear program." It claimed that it had agreed on the broad lines of the agreement.

White House National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby, on the other hand, emphasized in his statement on August 9 that contrary to the news, there was no agreed negotiation series.

Following Kirby's statement, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said on August 10 that reaching an agreement on establishing diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia was "a matter of time".

Saudi Arabia has not yet commented on the issue.
