According to a written statement from the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Eli Cohen attended the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected President of South American country Paraguay, Santiago Pena.

Cohen met with President Santiago Pena after he took office.

Paraguay has decided to move its embassy to Jerusalem this year.

The President of Paraguay will inaugurate his country's embassy in Jerusalem later this year.

It was reported that Israel will reopen its embassy in Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay. In the statement that also included the words of Foreign Minister Cohen, Cohen stated that they "continue to strengthen the international status" of Jerusalem, which he claims is the so-called eternal capital of Israel.

"The opening of the Paraguayan embassy in Jerusalem and the Israeli embassy in Asuncion will strengthen Israel's regional and international position and important ties between the countries," Cohen said.

OPENING OF EMBASSIES IN JERUSALEM AND RETURNS

While Israel unilaterally accepts Jerusalem as its so-called whole and unified capital, the Palestinians defend an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Former US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's "capital" on December 6, 2017, and officially moved his country's embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 14, 2018.

Paraguay also decided to move its embassy to Jerusalem, but reversed the decision in 2018 after a change of government.

It is stated that Honduras, which took its embassy to Jerusalem, is on the agenda to take a step back and move its embassy to Tel Aviv again.

Some countries have announced that they are considering moving their embassies to Jerusalem, but have not yet taken a step in this direction. Countries such as Brazil, Czechia and Hungary also announced the opening of commercial offices in Jerusalem.
