Two Democrats from the House of Representatives on Wednesday formally introduced an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
The resolution by congressman Brad Sherman and supported by Al Green, called for Trump to be impeached for “high crimes and misdemeanors".
Among the crimes Trump allegedly committed is obstruction of justice related to his firing in May of former FBI Director James Comey while the bureau was probing possible collusion between Trump's presidential campaign and Moscow, Sherman said in the resolution.
“In all of this, Donald John Trump has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as president and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States. Wherefore, Donald John Trump, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial and removal from office," he added.
Sherman said he may enter additional articles of impeachment as investigations into the possible coordination continue, but he acknowledged any article of impeachment is unlikely to advance in the Republican-controlled House "in the near future".
Regarding obstruction of justice and tampering, the evidence “we have is sufficient to move forward now," he said in a statement. "And the national interest requires that we do so."
Green is the only co-sponsor of the resolution in the 435-member chamber, and many fellow Democrats have warned the measure is premature.
