According to the Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA), the average monthly cost of living for a family of four in Istanbul rose to 42,593 Turkish liras (around 1,590 U.S. dollars), rising by nearly 3,800 liras in one month.
Olive oil prices witnessed the most notable year-on-year increase of 144.37 percent, while the prices of pasta, chickpeas and milk rose by 51.76 percent, 81.79 percent, and 73.29 percent, respectively, according to the research.
Turks have long been struggling with the increasing cost of living under high inflation, which reached 58.94 percent year-on-year in August, according to official data.
The government is taking a series of measures to ease the burden of the high cost of living, ramping up minimum wages and pensions as well as rising interest rates.
Türkiye has increased the minimum wage by 34 percent for the second half of 2023, from 8,506 liras to 11,402 liras.
On Aug. 24, Türkiye's central bank announced a bigger-than-expected interest rate hike of 750 basis points, from 17.5 percent to 25 percent, to curb inflation.
