A positive development recorded in the Yemeni Civil War, which broke out in 2015 for political reasons and caused heavy destruction throughout the country for 8 years.
The ceasefire decision taken with the presence of Ramadan in Yemen was welcomed with joy. It was stated that the ceasefire agreed between the Yemeni government and the Houthis, with the mediation of the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg, will be implemented as of the first day of Ramadan, and that the ceasefire will last for at least 2 months.
However, attempts to make the ceasefire permanent after the 2-month peace process are of great importance in the critical process.
THE ARAB WORLD IS HAPPY
The ceasefire decision in Yemen welcomed by Arab countries. While expressions supporting the ceasefire decision were used in the official statements made by the foreign ministries of Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Algeria and Qatar, it was aimed to make the ceasefire permanent. It was hoped that the initiative would continue. The ceasefire in Yemen was also highly appreciated by international organizations operating in the Arab world. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Gulf Cooperation Organization (GCC) and the Arab League praised the ceasefire decision in their statements regarding the ceasefire in Yemen.
HOUTHIS’ PROTECTOR, IRAN, CONSIDERS THE CEASEFIRE POSITIVELY
Iran, which provides political, military and logistical support to the Houthis, who are the parties to the Yemeni Civil War, welcomed the 2-month ceasefire decision, which will silence the weapons between the Yemeni parties. Saeed Khatibzadeh, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced in a written statement that they welcome the temporary ceasefire in Yemen. Khatibzadeh stated that the agreement attaches importance to the situation of achieving a permanent ceasefire in the country in line with finding a political solution to the crisis in Yemen.
MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF TURKEY: “WE SUPPORT THE POSITIVE PROCESS”
The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs also takes kindly the announced ceasefire between the Yemeni parties. In a written statement made by the Ministry, while it is hoped that the said positive step will follow the declaration of a permanent ceasefire and political solution process throughout the country, Turkey will continue to support the efforts of the UN Special Representative in this process, encourage dialogue and reconciliation among all segments, and stated that it will provide support to the Yemeni people.
"We believe that resolving the conflict in Yemen within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions and determined international parameters, through dialogue and on the basis of constitutional legitimacy, is essential for the establishment of lasting security and stability in our region," the statement said.
CIVIL WAR DESTROYED THE PEOPLE IN YEMEN
In Yemen, which is currently the poorest country in the world, the economy and production have come to a standstill due to the civil war that has been going on since 2015, while people are struggling with hunger. Airports, ports, transportation routes were destroyed due to conflicts. People in Yemen are trying to make a living with humanitarian aid brought with great difficulty from abroad. Nearly 337,000 people have lost their lives in the civil war, which has caused great destruction in the country.
