The mayor of Van, a provincial capital in southeast Turkey, was jailed pending trial on terrorism charges early Friday, a police official said.
Bekir Kaya from the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) and four other municipal officials were arrested Thursday for offenses of “knowingly and willfully” assisting the PKK terrorist organization.
He is the latest elected official from the east and southeast to be remanded on charges relating to the PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU.
