The Bangsamoro Peace Agreement, which was signed in 2014 between the Philippines Government of the time and the largest Islamic resistance group Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the country, opened the door to an autonomous state for Moro Muslims. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who came to office in 2016, also endorsed the peace agreement signed by the then President of the Philippines Benigno Aquino. Last January, the referendum on the Bangsamoro Organic Law referendum in Mindanao, a Muslim-populated state, was approved by a majority vote. According to the results of this referendum, Moro Muslims gained the right to establish an autonomous administration with wide rights in Mindaona province. Following the referendum, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte appointed members of the Bangsamoro Transitional Authority to run the region. Of the 80 members of the Transitional Authority, Hacı İbrahim Cafer, 41 of them were elected from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and 39 from the Philippine Government. Moro Muslims in the south of the Philippines have achieved many economic and political gains after these political developments.
