Tomita Koji, Japan's Ambassador to Washington, announced that NATO plans to open a liaison office in Tokyo in order to strengthen cooperation with his country.
Ambassador Tomita, at the press conference he held in Washington, where he served, touched upon the G7 Summit to be held this month and the recent NATO-Japan relations.
Noting that NATO plans to open a liaison office in the capital Tokyo in order to strengthen cooperation with Japan, Tomita said that they are working in this direction.
In the face of China's growing influence, the Russia-Ukraine crisis and North Korea's missile threats, Tomita recalled that the theme of the G-7 summit is to "strengthen the rule-based international order".
NATO sees Japan as a partner country.
Kishida Fumio went to Madrid in June 2022 to become the "first Japanese prime minister" to attend a NATO Leaders' Summit.
"It will be a way to further strengthen the partnership between NATO and our valuable partner Japan," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in Tokyo in January, pointing to stronger bilateral relations.
The G7 Leaders' Summit will be hosted by Japan on May 19-21, in the city of Hiroshima in the southwestern part of the country.
