Hundreds of protesters gathered in Kano state, carrying Niger flags, chanting "Niger is our neighbor", "The war against Niger is injustice", "This is the work of the Westerners" and "What we want is justice" against ECOWAS and the Nigerian government.
ECOWAS, at the summit it held in Nigeria on 10 August, emphasized that the way of negotiation in resolving the crisis in Niger was still open, but drew attention to the fact that the use of force was still on the table as a last resort.
In this context, the defense ministers of the ECOWAS member countries were instructed to prepare and deploy the reserve forces. Information on where and when the reserve forces will be deployed was not shared.
The possibility of military intervention also drew the reaction of other junta governments in West Africa.
Burkina Faso and Mali, where there are soldiers in the administration, warned ECOWAS in a joint statement that military intervention in Niger means waging war against them, and Guinea also made a statement of support for the junta.
