According to Pampal, if the necessary measures are not taken as soon as possible, after the possible big Istanbul earthquake, nothing will be the same in Turkey anymore.

The 3.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Yalova on Sunday caused fear and panic.

While the earthquake in question was thought to be a harbinger of a possible major Istanbul earthquake, Milli Gazete discussed the issue with earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Süleyman Pampal.

Stating that the earthquake off the coast of Yalova was a warning for a possible big Istanbul earthquake, Pampal said that the earthquake expected in Istanbul would be very destructive and nothing would be the same in Turkey after the expected earthquake.

Speaking to the Milli Gazete after the earthquake off Yalova, earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Süleyman Pampal made remarkable statements.

Stating that there are unbroken lines in the region such as the North Anatolian and Central Marmara Fault Lines, Pampal said, "Istanbul was severely damaged in the earthquakes of 1766 and 1894. We are expecting an earthquake in Istanbul in the near future and this situation worries us. The region is active at the point of fault lines mobility and there are movements."

“There is nothing concrete”

Pampal said that after the earthquakes, the earthquakes that occurred in Kahramanmaraş came to mind, and noted that they expected the possible big Istanbul earthquake to be very destructive.

Stating that Istanbul should be prepared for earthquakes, Pampal said, "As experts, we are obliged to talk and explain. Managements have to take steps and do business. What have we done since 1999? What was done concretely for Istanbul after the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş? There's nothing concrete."

“WE HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THIS”

Earthquake expert Pampal said that if Istanbul is destroyed, Turkey will be under the rubble.

"After the possible big Istanbul earthquake, nothing will be the same. We see how Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes affect the economy. Consider how much the Istanbul earthquake will affect. We have to think about it", Pampal added.

Pampal concluded his speech by stating that the probability of a major earthquake in Istanbul in 5-10 years has increased to 70-80% and this rate is very high.
