The broad definition of unemployment includes the unemployed under the classic narrow definition, the unemployed who have lost hope of finding a job, the unemployed who are not looking for work but are ready to work, and seasonal and time-dependent workers.
According to TURKSTAT data, the number of undefined unemployed narrow-defined unemployed, which was 3 million 136 thousand in May 2018, increased by 1 million 21 thousand in April 2019 and rose to 4 million 157 thousand. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased by 3.4 percentage points to 13 percent compared to the previous year.
In the DISK-AR statement, "Seasonally adjusted unemployment continues to climb both monthly and yearly. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, which was 10.6 percent in May 2018, rose to 14 percent in May 2019. This rate was 13.8 percent in April 2019. Thus, excluding seasonal effects of sectors such as agriculture, tourism and construction, unemployment continues to rise both proportionally and numerically. In May 2019, despite a partial decline in seasonally adjusted unemployment compared to April 2019, the increase in seasonally adjusted unemployment continues."
Non-agricultural unemployment also continues to climb. Excluding the agricultural sector, where unpaid family workers are concentrated, there is a sharp increase in unemployment. Seasonally adjusted non-agricultural unemployment, which was 12.6 percent in May 2018, rose to 16.2 percent in May 2019.
The number of unemployed persons defined by DISK-AR was 6 million 890 thousand in May 2019 with an increase of 1 million 183 thousand from 5 million 707 thousand in May 2018. The broad-defined unemployment rate was calculated as 19.8 percent in May 2019.
Since August 2018, the regular rise in unemployment has affected young people and young women the most. Seasonally adjusted youth unemployment rose by 6.0 points from May 2018 to 25.5 percent from 19.5 percent. Thus, one out of four young people is unemployed.
The number of young people (NEET) in education and employment (15-24 years) was 2 million 803 thousand in May 2019.
Women's unemployment, which was 12.4 percent in May 2018, increased by 2.5 percentage points to 14.9 percent in May 2019. Non-agricultural women's unemployment climbed to 18.9 percent.
Parallel to the economic crisis and the contraction in industrial production and growth, employment continues to shrink. Therefore, not only unemployment increases but also a big contraction in employment. In May 2018, 28 million 716 thousand season-adjusted employment decreased by 840 thousand people to 27 million 876 thousand in May 2019 fell.
The number of unemployed people registered to İŞKUR was announced as 4 million 418 thousand in June 2019. Thus, the number of unemployed registered to İŞKUR was 261 thousand above the number of unemployed (unadjusted seasonally) survey based on the survey announced by TURKSTAT.

Seasonally adjusted employment, which was 28 million 716 thousand in May 2018, decreased by 840 thousand and dropped to 27 million 876 thousand in May 2019. Between August 2018 and May 2019, when the crisis began, the loss in employment was 967 thousand. In other words, 967 thousand people were left out of employment or lost their jobs during the crisis.
