Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday following a rocket fire from the Palestinian territory, according to the Israeli military.

In a statement, the army said the raids targeted a military compound belonging to Palestinian group Hamas in southern Gaza Strip.

A Palestinian security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the strikes targeted two Hamas military positions in the southern Khan Younis city.

One Palestinian was slightly injured in the attack, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The airstrikes came shortly after Israel said it had intercepted a rocket fire from Gaza into southern Israel.

Tension has risen across the West Bank and Gaza Strip following U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision last week to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Jerusalem remains at the heart of the Israel-Palestine conflict, with Palestinians hoping that East Jerusalem – occupied by Israel in 1967 -- might eventually serve as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
