The first semester of the 2021-2022 academic year ended last week. While a solution to the chronic problems of the education system could not be found, the “2021 Education Evaluation Report” prepared by the Turkish Education Association (TED) revealed the summary of the year 2021 in the field of education. In the report prepared by TED, problems in education were discussed under many titles. While taking lessons from the coronavirus pandemic and the blows of education, a proposal was made to implement an action plan against the crises that will be encountered in the future, it was pointed out that education faces problems at many points, not only from the pandemic.
3 OUT OF EVERY 10 CANDIDATES IN TYT DIDN'T PASS THE DAM, IN YKS 4 OUT OF EVERY 10 CANDIDATES ARE PLACED
With the Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS), which is applied for every student who completes high school education, to continue their education at the university. In the report, in which the relevant data were evaluated, it was stated that 789,435 of the 2,416,974 candidates who entered the Core Proficiency Test (TYT) stage in the YKS, which was implemented in two stages, could not pass the 150 threshold applied in order to make a choice. In the light of the data, three of every 10 candidates who participated in YKS were below the 150 threshold in TYT. While 1 million of the 2,5 million candidates applying to YKS can be placed in an undergraduate program, it was noted that only 4 out of every 10 candidates who entered the YKS were placed in a higher education program.
THE LOWEST TEACHER APPOINTMENT OF THE LAST 16 YEARS HAS BEEN ACHIEVED IN 2021
In the report, while the teacher appointments made in 2021 were also mentioned, it was noted that the need for teachers in Turkey is over 100,000. Reminding that 21,407 teacher appointments were made in Turkey in 2021, despite the need of more than 100,000, it was underlined that when compared with previous years, the lowest teacher appointments of the last 16 years were realized. In the report, it was also emphasized that the teacher shortage could not be closed for a long time with similar figures.
TEACHING PROFESSIONAL LAW SHOULD BE CONSIDERED HOLISTICALLY
While making evaluations about the "Teaching Profession Law", which has been on the agenda for a long time, it was noted that special attention should be paid to the "Teaching Profession Law", underlining that it is a reference that will guide all policies. It was underlined that the law that will come into force should be in a way that will respond to a holistic approach regarding teacher policies in terms of content.
1 OUT OF 15 STUDENTS IN THE 15 AGE GROUP IS NOT SATISFIED WITH THEIR LIFE
The report also included the degrees of satisfaction with their life revealed by the “Social and Emotional Skills Survey” conducted by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). According to the data obtained from the research, it is stated that the 15-year-old students are lower than the 10-year-old students' life satisfaction in all of the countries participating in the research. While it is stated that the international life satisfaction is lower in the data related to the group, it is stated that while the international average is 8,23 in the 10-year-old group, it is 8,10 in Turkey, while the international average is 7,18 in the 15-year-old group, it is 6,30 in Turkey. According to the research, 1 out of every 5 of 15-year-old students in Turkey, were not satisfied with their lives.
676,000 CHILDREN AGES 6-17 ARE OUT OF SCHOOL
Changes in schooling rates in Turkey were mentioned in the report. Considering the enrollment rates in primary and secondary schools in the last ten years, it was noted that although the enrollment rates in primary schools remained almost the same, the enrollment rate in secondary schools was at the lowest level of the last ten years. In addition, the figures in the schooling rates of children between the ages of 6-17 who are in the age of compulsory education are remarkable. In the report, as a result of the comparison of the population registration system based on the address and the Ministry of National Education's formal education statistics, it was revealed that approximately 676,000 children were out of school. It was underlined that the majority of out-of-school children were between the ages of 14-17.
