While the relevant and ministers shared data that the building stock in question was built before, it turned out that the truth was not like that at all.
It was determined that only 19 percent of the collapsed structures in Nurdağı belonged to after 2008.
The buildings destroyed after the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes became the subject of discussion.
While many titles came to the fore whether the buildings were inspected or not, and the materials used, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that 98 percent of the destroyed buildings were before 2000, which further enlarged the debate.
Finally, the Minister of Environment and Urbanization, Murat Kurum, said that 96 percent of the destroyed buildings were before 1999, which was met as a contradiction.
THE NUMBER OF BUILDINGS DESTROYED AFTER 2008 IS TOO MUCH
City Planner Nihat Yıldız investigated the collapsed structures by examining the earthquake zone one by one with his comprehensive report.
Yıldız determined the construction date of the buildings on the satellite map, especially the materials used in the provinces in question.
In the report, it was emphasized that the information that 98 percent of the buildings destroyed in the earthquake were built in accordance with the provisions of the old regulations before 2000 is incorrect, and it was pointed out that some of the destroyed buildings were built between 2008-2012 and some between 2012-2014.
NUMBER OF BUILDINGS DESTROYED AFTER 2008 19 PERCENT
City Planner Nihat Yıldız said that 81 percent of the destroyed buildings in Nurdağı district were structures built before 2008.
"We do not know which of the destroyed structures were built according to the 2002 new earthquake regulations, but 19 percent of the structures destroyed in the earthquake were built after 2008. Looking at the buildings built and destroyed in the last ten years; It is understood that first of all, the ground floor collapsed, and then the other floors were closed on top of each other in the form of sandwiches. It has been argued that one of the main reasons for the damages is the lack of infill walls in the commercial spaces on the ground floors with the damaged floors, the column cut, the use of commercial floors up to 6 meters together with the pull-out floors. To prevent this; residential area and commercial areas should not be planned in the same building. Buildings with basement floors were found to be more robust than structures without basements. In the zoning plans made for this, at least one basement floor should be made on all kinds of land and should not be used as a settlement," he said.
